Magnet Digital Art

The Digital Arts program offers students comprehensive art experiences with detailed explorations of Adobe Photoshop©, Adobe Animate© and Adobe Illustrator©. Students will also learn about the history, analysis, and interpretation of art and design.

Photography & Digital Imaging

Students learn fundamentals of digital photography. How cameras work, how composition works, how lighting works, how to use photo editing software. Perhaps the most useful part of classroom instruction will be daily reviews of photos students have shot the previous day(s).  They will see what makes a successful photo and what does not.

University Connections: School of Design, Arts & Engineering leverages college-level expertise to inform the development of magnet course offerings and strengthens overall program rigor. Transdisciplinary thematic curriculum allows students to select and focus on College and Career Pathways.

Visual Arts 1 Beginning

This is an introductory course to the visual arts.  The content covers a variety of concepts and drawing media, painting and color theory, three-dimensional design, pottery, calligraphy and techniques in perspective.  Students learn about art history and visual art careers.  This course is a prerequisite course for advanced art classes.

Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy is very student centered. I believe that students are capable of doing great work at any age, and my job is to inspire and empower them to think creatively. A powerful way to empower our learners is to provide them with the tools and skills, to manage and deal with change effectively. Creative thinking is one of those tools/skills and is regarded as a key skill for success. In my classroom, I am the facilitator and guide, giving students opportunities to create and solve artistic problems and get out of their comfort zone. I help students gain the skills they need to communicate their ideas effectively and make art that is meaningful to them. I challenge students to try new things and to achieve what they thought they couldn't. I incorporate cross-curricular experiences organically in the art room.  We work to build literacy skills through observing and talking about art, and by writing about students' own ideas and artwork. Most students will not grow up to work as artists, but the habits of mind gained through art classes will serve them no matter their future career path.

Procedures

Procedures include anything that has a set routine. Routines will be established and promoted from DAY ONE. For example, when students come into the classroom, they will know the procedure for getting started with class. In my classroom, students will come in and sit in their seats and beginning working on the opening activity. 

The following activities have routines or proper procedures that we (as a class) will go over and discuss:

  • Coming into class and getting started

  • Storing materials

  • Clean up (especially specific materials such as paints and paintbrushes)

  • What areas are off limits (such as the Kiln)

  • Procedure is for turning in assignments/projects/portfolios

  • Procedure if a student was absent or tardy (where to pick up missed assignments).

  • Bathroom procedures (in compliance with the school procedures)

  • Fire Drill / Tornado Warning / Emergency Procedures (in accordance with the school procedures).


Rules

Rules, like other classroom management categories will be established and promoted from DAY ONE. I like to keep my rules very short and easy to remember. They will be introduced and explained for all students. I also like to post my rules in the front of the classroom for all students to see as a visual reminder. The 4 major rules in my classroom are:

  1. Be Respectful (Arrive on time, Raise your hand to speak, etc.)

  2. Be Responsible ( Follow directions, Do your best work, Clean up your area, etc.)

  3. Be Prepared (Come with all your materials, Participate in class, etc.)

  4. Be Creative and Use your imagination!

In addition to my personal classroom rules, all of the school and county rules are in place at all times, and students will be reminded of this. 


Expectations

  • I hold all of my students up to their highest potential and I expect nothing else. 

  • I expect students to respect one another as well as other faculty, staff, administrators, and myself. 

  • I expect students to come to class on time daily, with all of their materials, and use their time wisely for the duration of the class period.

  • I expect students to take risks in their artistic choices. 

  • I expect students to aid in the creation of a classroom environment that is an inviting, fun atmosphere that promotes creative expression and exploration through various artistic processes and mediums. 

  • I expect students to engage and take part in classroom discussions and critiques on a personal, peer and group level to promote self-reflection and learning from others. Thus, also promoting an open-mind view toward art and more. 

  • I expect students to be excited about learning and investigating new art concepts as well as art history and other cross-content information intertwined with our class standards. 

  • I expect to see students grow in the exploration of art mediums and the historical role that art has played in the history of the United States and the world. 
    Through this exploration, I expect students to grow as an artist.
